Night of museums and galleries

International Museum Day traditionally falls on 18 May. It was established in 1977 by the General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). A French initiative was then born out of this tradition and, since 2005, events have been organised under this tradition during which museums and galleries are open in the evening and at night.

The activities of museums during the Night of Museums and Galleries are oriented towards activities that remain hidden from the public throughout the year. At that time museums open their ‘hidden’ chambers to the public and reveal secrets hidden from public view. In this way the public can enter the secrets of the ‘museum kitchen’. ‘Unlocking the secrets’ also helps the public through the knowledge and information thus gained to better understand the importance of museums in preserving part of the cultural and natural heritage preserved in museums.

The Night of Museums and Galleries is a pan-European event organised under the auspices of the Council of Europe with the aim of presenting cultural heritage and the importance of preserving and protecting it as widely as possible for cultural exchange, the dissemination of information on the cultural diversity of the different countries and regions of Europe, informal education and cultural leisure.

We look forward to your visit!
